Energy access deficits around the globe show clear regional disparities – with sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 3/4 of the global deficits. As such, the majority of our projects to increase energy access by supporting the off-grid solar market are concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa, followed by Asia.
However, the lessons we have learned through more than a decade of working to close the energy access gap in sub-Saharan Africa can be applied in other geographies where people are living without access to modern energy services.
In 2018, we launched our first project in Haiti, where less than 50% of the population has access to grid electricity, under the World Bank’s Haiti Modern Energy for All project.
