Narrowing the Energy Gap: Mobisol Receives IFC Investment Boost

Less than a quarter of households in Kenya are connected to the national electric grid, but solar energy solutions are narrowing the energy gap. Thirty percent of unconnected households are now using decentralized solar energy solutions – placing it among the countries with the highest rates of off-grid solar usage.

This statistic is particularly striking when considering that solar lantern uptake in Kenya stood at only 2% in 2009 – when Lighting Africa kicked off our flagship program. Since then, more than 3 million quality-verified products have been sold in Kenya.

Jacinta Auma, living in rural Kenya, is one such consumer. She has solar panels from Lighting Global associate, Mobisol, installed on her roof. She now uses their pay-as-you-go (PAYG) energy services to power her home.

Mobisol, recently received an equity investment from IFC of €5.42 million to help accelerate their growth in Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya.
